What Exactly is Microfibre?

Microfibre products have been a real game-changer in the world of cleaning, and the hype is all true. Microfibre provides superior cleaning solutions and even numerous health benefits. In spite of the product’s quickly spreading fame, a question frequently asked is: What is microfibre, anyway?

What is Microfibre?

Microfibre is a man made synthetic blend of: One, polyester, which has great soil-removing qualities; and, two, polyamide, which has excellent moisture-retaining qualities.

Textile Fineness

A key component of this product is the “micro” factor in the cloth. To understand the great qualities of microfibre, it helps to understand the fineness of the material. A microfibre can be defined as a fibre with 1 denier or less. A denier is the measurement or unit of textile fineness. A natural reference is silk. One silk strand is about one denier. Approximately one gram is the weight of a 9000 metre strand of silk. “Microdenier” is a term used to describe materials that weigh less than a gram per 9000 metres.

Strands of Microfibre

The polyamide and polyester materials in microfibre are bundled together into a strand that looks like a star, under a microscope. Chemicals, steam, and/or agitation are used to split the bundles into ultra-fine single fibres. The strands are woven together, which creates a surface area which has millions of spaces between fibres in which to trap some of the toughest things to clean. Microfibre makes quick work of cleaning dirt, debris, grease, and moisture. Grease normally requires chemicals to break it down for removal. With this amazing fibre, often no chemicals are needed to clean away grease.

Magnetic Capabilities

Microfibre has a magnetic quality; and, strangely enough, dirt and dust do, too. The microfibre attracts and holds soils like an ingenious super sponge. The material uses capillary vacuum force that leaves the surface clean and free of residue. Dust and dirt are negatively charged, and microfibres are positively charged, which is why there is a magnetic effect.

More about Microfibre

There are many benefits to using microfibre cloths and mops for cleaning, and it’s because of the impressive science behind the product. Here’s 3 more interesting facts about the cleaning miracle that is microfibre:

• There are different levels of quality in microfibre products. Microfibre of the highest quality is often 0.5 denier or less. When the fibre is finer, it means that the surface area on the cloth does a superior job of cleaning surfaces and holding onto soil, dirt, and germs.

• Microfibres can hold up to seven times their own weight in liquid.

• High-quality microfibres can be up to 100 times finer than a strand of human hair or 1/100th the diameter of a hair strand.

Now that you know exactly what microfibre is, why wait to use it for superior cleaning? Or maybe you’re already using some of the best microfibre cleaning products in your process.
