Chemical safety is an important part of your workplace’s health and safety plan. There’s a lot to it but let’s boil it right down. Here’s ‘Safe Chemical Handling’ in a nutshell.

1. Take precautions and preventive measures

Consider all chemicals as hazardous. Follow safety and handling rules. Follow first aid procedures.

2. Wear PPE (personal protective equipment)

Always wear gloves and all other PPE listed on the Safety Data Sheet or instructed by your supervisor.

3. SDS and label

Read the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before using a chemical. Know where the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are kept. Ensure chemicals are correctly labelled.

4. Handle chemicals safely

Never mix or decant chemicals.

5. Safe workplaces

If unsure or in doubt… STOP and get advice! Comply with all work health and safety requirements.
