Sodium Hypochlorite PPM Calculator

Work out exactly how much sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) concentrate you need to hit a target PPM (parts per million), plus the plain 1 : X ratio you can scale to any bucket, drum, or dosing pump.

1. Stock strength (% of available chlorine)

The % of available chlorine will be listed on the label, however, Sodium Hypochlorite (Hypo) degrades over time. It's strength is especially affected by light and exposure. That's why you should confirm the true strength with your supplier or with a recent test rather than trusting the label. Pick a preset or type your own.

2. PPM target concentration

1 ppm = 1 mL of available chlorine per 1,000,000 mL of solution — so stock that is 12.5% available chlorine is 125,000 ppm before it's diluted. Pick a preset or type your own.

3. Amount of ready-to-use solution needed (batch size)

How much ready-to-use solution you want to end up with. Pick a preset or type an amount, then choose mL or L.

Handling the mix

  1. Add concentrate into water, not water into concentrate — it keeps any splash diluted from the first drop.
  2. Never mix with acid, ammonia, or other cleaning chemicals — mixing Sodium Hypochlorite with acid releases chlorine gas.
  3. Gloves, eye protection, and airflow — mix in a ventilated area, same as you would with any concentrate.
  4. Diluted ready-to-use solution loses strength fast — mix only what you'll use and dose it within 24 hours for a reliable result.
  5. Label the container — contents, ppm, and mix date, especially if it's going into a bottle or drum for later use.
