Handy tips
- Bulk-fill liquid hand soap dispensers should be cleaned and disinfected regularly with warm to hot water. Bulk fill dispensers are not recommended if hygiene is a priority.
- Ensure the dispenser instructions are followed when re-filling a dispenser.
- Cold water is better than nothing but most liquid hand soaps lather up and perform better with warm water. The active ingredients in most soap formulations are released more easily, making the soap even more effective for cleaning your hands of dirt, grease, oils and germs without stripping away the natural oils in your skin.

How often should I wash my hands?
Hand washing is considered the most important single measure in preventing the spread of disease. It works best at washing germs away, not necessarily killing them. XO2 makes antibacterial liquid soap, but that type of soap hasn't been scientifically proven to be more effective in every case, so use what you like best. Regular hand washing is still the best way to minimise your risk of catching and spreading illness.
When should I wash my hands?
Getting into a habit of regular hand washing throughout your day improves hygiene and health. These are the times it matters most:
- When your hands are dirty
- Before and after eating
- Before preparing food
- Between handling raw and cooked (already prepared) foods
- Before and after attending to patients, or to sick children or adults
- Before you attend to any cuts, wounds or rashes
- Before and after using gloves
- After going to the toilet
- After cleaning a toilet or urinal
- After changing nappies
- After blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing
- After handling animals, rubbish or chemicals
- After smoking
- After working in the garden
- After playing outside
Note: Washing and sanitising your hands is required regardless of whether you are using gloves. Disposable gloves should always be disposed of after use and never washed or reused.
Are touch-free soap dispensers better?
Yes. Here's why:
- Better hygiene: touch-free dispensers drastically reduce the chance of contamination.
- The right amount every time: automatic dispensers give you the right amount, because more isn't always better and over-use is costly for the facility.
- Saves time: they're quick and easy for visitors to use.
- Less wastage: the best automatic dispensers control usage, so water and product aren't wasted.
- Less mess: very little cleaning of the washroom is needed after use.
- A brilliant user experience: they encourage people to wash their hands and show that a facility cares about hygiene and the washroom experience.
How do I look after a bulk-fill soap dispenser?
Clean and disinfect bulk-fill liquid soap dispensers regularly with warm to hot water, and follow the dispenser instructions when you refill. Bulk-fill dispensers aren't recommended if hygiene is a priority.
Is warm water better for washing hands?
Cold water is better than nothing, but most liquid hand soaps lather up and perform better with warm water. The active ingredients in most soap formulations are released more easily, so the soap is even more effective at cleaning dirt, grease, oils and germs off your hands without stripping the natural oils from your skin.
